A Second Sportsbook Opens Up In New MexicoSANTA FE, N.M. – On Monday, a sportsbook opened up in Santa Fe which makes it the second sportsbook in the state.

The new sportsbook is located in the Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The difference between the Hilton sportsbook and the Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel near Albuquerque is that the Hilton is going to be the first sportsbook in the state that will offer sports wagers alongside with race betting.

Tribal-State Compacts Allow For Sports Betting

Although the tribes are opening up sportsbooks in New Mexico, state lawmakers actually haven’t officially legalized sports betting in the state. The reason that the tribes are allowed to open up sportsbooks is because of the tribal-state compact.

The compact says that the tribes in New Mexico are allowed to open up casinos and they can provide Class III gaming. The main thing to understand about sports gambling in the state is that it’s technically not against the law. The gaming facilities that belong to the state are just not allowed to establish sportsbooks.

Since the compact allows for the tribes to provide Class III gaming in their casinos, this left the door open for interpretation. The tribes said that the compact allows them to provide sports betting because it is Class III gaming. The state agreed and the tribes of New Mexico are the only ones that are allowed to open sportsbooks right now.

Attorney General Is Interested In Helping

The tribes themselves have been the ones to decide on how they can provide sports betting to their patrons, but the state is interested in offering assistance. David Carl, spokesman to Attorney General Hector Balderas said that the office is interested in working with state lawmakers to creating a framework for other tribes to go off of.

“We will closely monitor New Mexico’s tribal gaming compacts and work with the legislature for proper statutory and regulatory oversight to require responsible gaming and enhanced integrity to create an even playing field for all,” said Carl.

SportsBettingNewMexico.com knows with the sportsbook at the Hilton Buffalo now open, the Santa Ana sportsbook faces competition for the first time. This could spur other tribes within the state to start considering and opening up their own sportsbooks as well. This could be especially true of the Attorney General does work with lawmakers to make a framework for the smaller tribes to follow.
